I have a 16 month old, female border collie. she is active, but very, very skinny. I feed her and feed her and she just won't put on weight, people said it was the food I am feeding her, I know it is a LOW quality dog food, so no remarks on that. but I can't afford like $50 for a 25 lb bag, so be reasonable. What brand should I feed her?Dog food is really quite hefty on the pocket. That's why maintaining a pet is really something that should be considered when your getting a little short on the budget. Maybe you should start considering cooking food for your dog.
Check out this link for some tips on what to give your dog and there's also a link for some good dog recipes that you can try:
http://dogtime.com/food-nutrition.htmlWhat about $50 for a 44 lb bag of Canidae all life stages - it would last one dog a long time as I feed 3 large (80 lb range) dogs for a month on it, and since it is all life stages it goes from puppy to senior so it ends up being pretty inexpensive for me to feed 3 dogs. Do you just have the one dog to buy for? If so - you could get a smaller bag and it would last a while too. Canidae is calorie dense so you wouldn't have to feed as much to put on weight on her as you would a dog food with fillers (like corn wheat and soy). Border Collies have a high metabolism any way and if she is active then you may want to feed her a little more than recommended of the Canidae should you choose that. Canidae All Lifes Stages Lamb Formula...but they have a lot of different flavors to chose from. I chose Lamb formula because you get more for your money...a 40lb bag for $45 so its a good deal and it is GREAT for your dog!
Its for all ages of dogs and for all activity levels. Look up what store near you sells it...and you might have to look around because different stores charge different amounts.
What about "Canidea All Life Stages"?
I feed this and i pay $34.00 for a 35lb dog food.
You can buy this at a Feed Store! :)
Hope this Helps!!
You might just have to buck up and pay for the better quality food - that's part of responsible ownership and should have been discussed before getting the dog. Low quality food can result in expensive to treat problems like allergies and in some cases other diseases.
You might also want to have a vet check your pup out. Worms and other parasites can cause weight loss - or not weight gain. This is actually strange, to me. But i think you should try feeding her mushy food, which comes in different sized cans. I think your dog might like it better, my dog likes mushy-food. If your dog gets any skinnier, take her to the vet ASAP, i think they would have your answer your looking for.
I hope this helped you.
Good Luckpurina is always good. but your vet may be able to give you RX food like ID call em I suggest Science Diet, any flavor. But the absolute best is Lamb meal& Rice. It's easy to digest, dogs love the flavor too!
And if you feed her what it says to on the back of the bag, it's easier and faster to put on weight. It's very healthy and wholesome, made with real brown rice and real Canada lamb meal! I buy it for my boston terrier, Gus, he loves it, and if he's been real good all day I put some warm water on it so it makes it stinkier, and the stinkier the better! (for dogs anyway! NOT for humans! lol) I get it $20.00 for the largest bag! You can buy it at Petco, Pet quarters, or PetSmart.
Good Luck!I feed my dog Kibbles and Bits and I add Purina Moist and Meaty to it which she loves.
Your dog might want some chicken breast, turkey breast, or hamburgers if you have some at home and they are cooked.well you got a bunch of good answers!! there are def a bunch of choices!! taking her to the vet def isnt a bad idea!! to rule out any health issues. also f weight is an issue, at dinnertie, you can mix a canof wet and a cup of dry food together, she will love it and it will hopefully put a lil meat on he bones! also, i know he strain of exspensive dog food. my dog eats royal canin, its a very good dog food, not the cheapest, but i believe its worth it. and i also beilieve the better he food you get the less of it they eat!! but you can always try a few steps above the food you do now and mix some wet food with it. dont do just wet though!! good luck thogh!!! :) Try feeding her SCIENCE DIET food. It's really good for dogs especially small dogs. It has nutrients and good taste. That's what I feed to my dog. Its also not expensive. It's about $5.00 for like a 2 gallon bag of food. I had the same problem with my poodle, and I started feeding her that. If you really want her to put on weight, try putting a little meat in there like little peices of chicken. She'll eat the food and chicken. I hope I helped :)I would ask my vet if i were you, it sounds liek she has worms or another type of disease. Good luck with your pup :)i have a rough collie and i feed him pedigree its cheap enoughWe pay about $35 for 50 lbs of Pedigree. They also have Purina One and Lamb and Rice. The latter is mostly meat. There are vitamin supplements. We usually check the recall also for pet foods. Maybe she needs special food. Do you know if she had any food allergies? I would have a vet check her for any problems-such as thyroid, etc. Wellness

Any Natura Brand

Please never use any food from Purina, because they are all crap, and you would never want to feed a pet that you loved the Purina brand. Here is thier website:

Never use Science Diet, either. That is a very crappy brand. If your dog is ever sick, the vet will recommend Science Diet. Their Rx diets are Ok for some dogs who need them, but don't get the regular Science Diet. Here is their website:

What food are you feeding?
Your dog may have worms from what you describe. And you shouldn't get a dog if you can't even buy it some good quality dog food! Hi! :)
Did you check with your vet to make sure its no medical issues like worms, etc? Also you can try adding a little high quality canned food like Merrick or Wellness. What kind of food are you feeding now? Try something like Chicken Soup For The Dog Lovers Soul, Solid Gold, Canidae, or Blue Buffalo. Best of luck!If you buy her a higher quality food, you know she'll eat less of it so you won't have to "feed her and feed her". It's really not that much more expensive in the end. If you don't want to feed top of the line like Orijen or Timberwolf Organics, for example, why not consider Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold or Canidae - much better foods, especially for an active dog.#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |
