  • A 5.0-kg rock is dropped from rest down a vertical mine shaft. How long does it take for the rock to reach a depth of 79 m? Neglect air resistance.

  • I'm sure you have these equations in your text, however, I wll supply them for you. This is a simple kinematics problem.

    y = y0 + v0*t + 1/2*a*t^2 where y is position, y0 is initial position, v0 is initial velocity, t is time, and a is acceleration

    Lets call the top of the shaft y = 0. This means that y0 = 0 and depth you are looking for y = -79 m . v0 is also zero, since the rock starts at rest. Since up is the positive direction, acceleration is negative (gravity). Plug in and solve.
