IF I PAY OFF A DEBT WITH A COLLECTION AGENCY....?

  • Will my credit report still say its a charge off etc, or will it say updated to "paid in full, etc."? Also If I do a pay for deletion with the debt collection agency and they accept, does the original creditor have to remove the negative information as stated in the terms of the pay for deletion?

  • It will update to show new balance to be zero but you may have to keep on them to make sure they update it. If they don't do it, you can write to the 3 credit reporting agencies and get it taken care of that way.

  • The item will show paid but will still be a negative item that stays on your credit file for the balance of the 7 year reporting period. Paying off the debt will not improve your credit score. However, creditors look at your whole credit report. Paid old debt is better than unpaid.

If you can come up with a lump sum payment, you can probably settle the debt for less than the full balance. Depending on how old the debt is, maybe 50% or less. Get any settlement agreement in writing and do not give the collector direct access to your bank account.

You can ask the collection agency for a pay for delete but they can only remove what they report to the credit bureau. The original creditor's charge off will remain if this was a regularly reported item like a credit card. In fact, if the collection agency doesn't remove the item, you won't be able to get the credit bureau to remove the item based on your pay for delete agreement.

  • in uk it will stay on your account even if you pay with a debt collector for 7 years

you cannot remove the charge unless it was put there in error and even then you you have to ring up the credit agency who will tell you to go to the place that put the msg with them and prove you dont have the account

my missus asked for a loan and my name was given for a check
but it was put down that i had an account with them when in fact i never did

i took at least a month to sort out and was a complete pain in the a$$

    hope this helps

  • No it will not. It will show on your credit report for 7 years. You should pay off all other debt first before the collection agency because this will prevent more negative info on your credit report. I would always pay the collection agency last because it will not help you credit.
