Do you care about social classes ? OFFTOPIC about slavery

There's slavery going on right now in Japan and other countries with girls who are forced to work in the sex industry.
I'm sure Maciano was just trying to keep the discussion germane to the topic at hand, even if he did come off as a little pedantic. Most civilized people would not consider the plight of these "hostesses" to be anything less than horrific.
I understand that. But even those caught up in non-sexual slavery wouldn't qualify as "real" slaves since their condition isn't covered "officially".
That's sexual slavery. Real slavery means that slaves have officially no rights, and can be bought, sold or even killed by their master. Slightly different I guess. :sorry: Anyway, even real slavery is unrelated to social classes, as slaves in the Antiquity were usually taken from conquered tribes, regardless of the people's status.
What I meant was that there used to be a officially recognised status for slaves in the US or in Ancient times, and I do not know any country where the government might still ackowledge that somebody cannot is completely deprived of rights as they are just slaves and therefore not even humans. Once the government recognises slavery, a slave cannot even sue someone in court, as they have no rights by definition. In the case of sexual slavery, they can still get help from someone. I was wondering in these African countries mentioned in your link whether the government actually approved slavery or not. In Somalia there is not even such a thing as a government, so I guess slavery is not "illegal" (as there are no laws).
I'm sure it's a real consolation to individuals who are caught up in conditions of slavery to find out that they're not "real" slaves because the institution isn't provided for or protected by legislation.

That's right. Slavery, religious castes, etc. are offtopic in this discussion, so I'll now split this into another thread.
